America's Scenic Byways

Mount Rogers Scenic Byway

60 miles - Approximately three hours

Take a trip through the Jefferson National Forest along the Mount Rogers Scenic Byway, a byway that is not in one part, but two! The roadway takes you into the heart of the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area.

From this byway you can access the Appalachian National Scenic Trail and the Virginia Creeper National Recreational Trail. There are several areas for picnicking and horseback riding available, and for a unique camping experience there are both modern and primitive campgrounds offered.

Mount Rogers Scenic Byway treats you to an incredible visual experience as it laces back and forth over whitewater streams and passes the southwest slopes of Whitetop Mountain. At the top of Whitetop, you can look to the north and view the geology created by sediment from ancient sea. Whitetop Mountain has some of the oldest exposed rocks on earth. Mt. Rogers, at 5,729 feet, is the highest point in Virginia and the focal point of the Mt. Rogers National Recreation Area.
