Zachary Taylor Parkway
203 miles - One to two days for a self-guided tour
The Zachary Taylor Byway connects Bogalusa to Pineville while crossing three other Louisiana Byways. It occasionally aligns with the Louisiana Great River Road, Northup Trail, and Colonial Trails Byway. Named after President Zachary Taylor, a hero of the Mexican-American War and War of 1812, the byway pays tribute to his legacy, including his home in Baton Rouge. Key stops along the route include Bogalusa, home of the Bogalusa Blues and Heritage Festival, and Franklinton, known for its blueberry farms and Bogue Chitto State Park. Visitors can enjoy diverse accommodations ranging from glamping to cabin stays, immersing themselves in the region’s natural beauty.
Further west, the byway passes through historic towns like Clinton, with its Greek Revival courthouse, and St. Francisville, known for its charming shops and homes. Crossing the Mississippi River via the John James Audubon Bridge leads to New Roads, where visitors can explore the Pointe Coupee Museum and False River dining. Lettsworth honors blues legend Buddy Guy, while Marksville features the Paragon Casino Resort and a museum dedicated to the Tunica Biloxi Tribe. The route concludes in Alexandria and Pineville, where military history sites like Fort Randolph and Camp Beauregard offer a glimpse into Louisiana's role in World War II. The byway provides a rich blend of history, culture, and outdoor recreation, from early Louisiana settlements to modern attractions like Kisatchie National Forest and scenic lakes.
