Waters of the Dancing Sky Scenic Byway

218 miles - Allow 4-5 hours to tour this byway.

Minnesota's northernmost scenic byway traces the Canadian border from Voyageurs National Park to Lake Bronson State Park, offering a rich experience for anglers, boaters, birders, and wildflower enthusiasts. The route follows the Rainy River from International Falls to Baudette, passes through fields of lady’s slippers to Warroad, and continues west along the Pine to Prairie Birding Trail. Zippel Bay State Park, with its 3-mile beach on Lake of the Woods, is a highlight, along with the area’s renowned fishing opportunities.

The byway is dotted with resorts near Voyageurs National Park and Lake of the Woods—two major draws for visitors. The region’s name, "Dancing Sky," refers to the aurora borealis, or northern lights, which often illuminate the skies. From scenic rivers and wildflower-filled roadsides to abundant birdlife and starry nights, this route offers a uniquely northern experience.
